Glaucoma Testing, Treatment, and More in Near Parkersburg, WV
Glaucoma is a disease of the eye that can cause vision loss and blindness. Glaucoma happens when fluid builds up in the front part of the eye. This extra fluid causes an increase in eye pressure, which can damage the optic nerve. A damaged optic nerve can lead to serious vision issues. Williamstown Eye Clinic can provide various types of testing and treatment for the different types of glaucoma to our patients. Our goal is to diagnose and treat glaucoma early to prevent vision loss. We recommend our patients test for glaucoma if they have certain risk factors, including:
- A family history of glaucoma
- Aged 60 or older
- Hispanic and aged 60 or older
- If you are African American
- If you are Asian
We test our patients for glaucoma using a group of tests. Part of the testing includes eye dilation. This can make your vision blurred and you will be sensitive to light. If you are being tested for glaucoma, we recommend making arrangements for someone to drive you home after your appointment. To protect your eyes, bring sunglasses to wear home. If your test is positive for glaucoma, we will work with you to create a treatment plan.
Macular Degeneration Screening at Williamstown Eye Clinic
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans. It is considered to be an incurable eye disease. Macular degeneration causes deterioration of the central portion of the retina, called the macula. This portion of the retina is responsible for our central vision. It controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in fine detail.
At Williamstown Eye Clinic, we can test for the two basic types of macular degeneration: dry and wet. Both types have different symptoms that we can discuss with you. If you have macular degeneration, we can discuss what stage you are in (early, intermediate, or late). We will go over the ways to slow the progression of your macular degeneration. There is no cure at this time, but things like a healthy diet, exercise, not smoking, and protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light can help slow the progression.
We recommend those who are 55 and older receive macular degeneration screening, as it is most common in those individuals. Other risk factors include:
- A family history of macular degeneration
- If you are Caucasian
- If you smoke

If you have diabetes, you need to have a comprehensive eye exam each year. Diabetes can be harmful to your eyes by damaging the small blood vessels in your retina. At Williamstown Eye Clinic, we can perform dilated eye exams for our diabetic patients to view and evaluate the retina. Our goal is to find any eye problems early so we can begin treatment and prevent vision loss. If you are receiving a dilated eye exam, make sure someone can drive you home after your appointment. Bring a pair of dark glasses or sunglasses to shade your eyes, as they will be sensitive to light. Schedule your diabetic eye exam today.
